ENThe Fjord of Kiel is alive. Noise is not disinformation, artistic retreat, or rebellion. It is the acoustic result of brutal vitality. Day and night, there is nonstop activity on this scale: an avid economy, inexorable ingestion, excretion, reproduction. As a consequence of global warming non-native species enter the scene. What we hear is brutal territorial pressure. It crackles, clanks, squishes, rattles, creaks, murmurs, and whooshes. In some approaches, hours of recorded noise have been mathematically translated into whispers or attached to instrumental libaries.
The life-sound of a single plankton, cut into an aluminum column, takes its place between genealogical tables and bronze busts in Kiel’s City Hall. These tiny creatures, invisible to the eye and ear and often overlooked, existed long before us and are given a public voice on the occasion of the ‚Night of Democracy‘DEDie Förde lebt. Das Rauschen ist keine Desinformation, kein künstlerisches Refugium, keine Rebellion. Es ist das akustische Resultat brutaler Lebendigkeit. Tag und Nacht wird auf diesem Massstab pausenlos gewirtschaftet: Nahrungsaufnahme, Ausscheidung, verzweifelte Vermehrung. Durch die Folgen der Klimaerwärmung betreten gebietsfremde Arten die Bühne. Wir hören territorialen Druck. Es knackt, klockt, squished, rasselt, knarzt, raunt und rauscht. In einigen Ansätzen wurde das Rauschen mathematisch in Flüstern übersetzt oder instrumentalen Bibliotheken zugeordnet.Der Lebenslaut eines einzelnen Planktons, in eine Säule aus Aluminium gefräst, bekommt seinen Platz zwischen bestehenden Ahnentafeln und Bronzebüsten im Kieler Rathaus. Die kleinen, für Auge und Ohr unsichtbaren und überhörten Lebewesen waren lange vor uns da und bekommen anlässlich der ‚Nacht der Demokratie’ eine öffentliche Stimme.
Die Stimme (DE)
Für Nukleus Kiel (ein Recherche/Kunst Projekt der Landeshauptstadt Kiel und HCOB Kunststiftung Schleswig-Holstein unter der kuratorischen & künstlerischen Leitung Sven Christian Schuch) habe ich mich über ein Jahr verpflichtet, der Kieler Förde eine Stimme zu geben. Die Politik diskutiert Themen wie Flussbett–Vertiefungen und Uferbewirtschaftung. Soziale, ökologische, allen voran ökonomische Perspektiven finden ihr Gehör. Aber was sagt die Förde selbst dazu? Als natürliche Entität, als Summe all seiner Kleinstlebewesen, die unsichtbare Welt der Mikroorganismen, ausserhalb unseres realitätsproduzierenden kognitiven Apparatuses liegend, kommt nicht zu Wort.In Kollaboration mit dem Geomar (Europas grösstem Meeresbiologie- und Ozeanforschungsinstitut) wurden der Kieler Förde systematisch Proben entnommen, und diese mit hochauflösenden Hydrophonen im Labor mikro- bzw. hydrofoniert. So können wir hören, was mit dem Auge nicht sichtbar ist. Das Wasser als eine kollektive Landschaft, ein vielstimmiger Chor aus Bioaktivität wird wahrnehmbar. Die Förde kriegt eine Stimme.Eröffnung: 02.Oktober im Kieler Rathaus zur 'Nacht der Demokratie’.
Die Stimme (The Voice) (EN)For Nukleus Kiel (research/art project by the City of Kiel and HCOB Schleswig-Holstein Art Foundation under the curatorial and artistic direction of Sven Christian Schuch), I have committed myself for over a year to giving the Kieler Förde (Fjord of Kiel) a voice. In politics issues such as riverbed deepening and shoreline management are discussed. Social, ecological, and above all economic perspectives are being heard. But what does the Fjord itself has to say? As a natural entity, as the sum of all its microorganisms, the invisible world, lying outside our reality-producing cognitive apparatus, is not given a voice.
In collaboration with GEOMAR (Europe's largest marine biology and ocean research institute), samples from the Fjord were systematically collected and later recorded with high-resolution hydrophones in Geomar’s laboratory. This will allow us to hear what is invisible to the eye. The water becomes perceptible as a collective landscape, a multi-voiced chorus of bioactivity. The fjord is receiving a voice.Opening October the 2nd at Kiel's City Hall for the 'Night of Democracy'
